Are you a distance runner looking to take cross country to the collegiate level in the United States? This guide helps you understand the college landscape, what programs look for, and how to prepare for recruitment.
Overview of college cross country
College cross country in the United States is contested across NCAA Divisions I, II, and III, NAIA, and NJCAA. Many programs sit alongside track and field, with a fall cross country season and indoor and outdoor track later in the year. Races are run on grass, dirt, or park courses rather than a track, and the calendar typically includes conference meets and end-of-season championships.
Athletic requirements
Coaches look for runners with competitive distance times, consistency across meets, and the ability to contribute to the team at conference competitions. A resume with recent marks, championship results, and experience on different course types helps show your level. If you also race track, including those marks can demonstrate versatility.
Recruitment process
Recruitment often starts in the junior year of high school. Compile an athletic resume with your best marks, season results, and a video or profile with recent races. Writing to programs clearly about your academic and athletic record is an essential step toward the university you want.
Scholarship opportunities
Scholarships can be full or partial, depending on the division, the team budget, and how you fit the program’s needs. At some schools, support is shared with the track and field roster. NCAA Division III does not offer athletic scholarships, though academic or need-based aid may be available. Understanding each school’s level helps you target realistic options.
Conclusion
Earning a cross country scholarship in the United States takes consistency, clear marks, and organized recruiting. With the right preparation, you can combine a college education with a collegiate distance season.
